GUIDELINES FOR CANDIDATES WITH PARTICULAR ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS
a. Course Directors and Providers of MLTE training and assessment courses will make provision for reasonable assistance to be given to candidates where required.
b. At assessment this assistance must not compromise the overall standards required for a leader to be in full control of a mountain/hill walking or rock climbing group at all times.
c. The major part of a WGL, ML or SPA assessment will be practical. A candidate with physical disabilities must be able to operate competently, as a leader, in terrain as defined in the appropriate syllabus. Such a candidate may be allowed extra time and if necessary some additional specialist equipment, provided that the safety and leadership of the group is not compromised. If the way in which a candidate performs assessment tasks is significantly different (e.g. using additional equipment not normally available to candidates) then approval should be gained from the MLTE office; assessment staff have discretion to adjust assessment methods (e.g. verbal as opposed to written questioning) to enable candidates to perform to the best of their ability.
d. Written papers form part of the assessment process. Candidates who have difficulties with the written element may be given additional time, a reader, or have that part of the assessment delivered to them by the assessor in a verbal question and answer session.
e. The Board is always seeking ways in which it can continue to support candidates who have particular assessment requirements to progress through the Award schemes.
